A virtual private network, or a VPN, is a device used to circumvent internet restrictions, or to use a private network so that you can browse on a private browser, no matter where you are. For this reason, it is often a popular option when the public wireless internet (or Wi-Fi) is sketchy at best and censored at worst. This is the case in China, where the Chinese Communist Party (or the CCP) likes to keep a tight hold on the internet, and heavily censors anything from the West.

Many VPN users choose to use a VPN for one of many reasons. It’s a popular choice for businesses, creating an internet that employees can access outside of the office that keeps everything secure. It’s also popular with those who value privacy.
