There is absolutely no reason why a Christian should avoid seeing a psychologist. Christians have needs like any other individual and these may, at times, include a need for psychological support or treatment. Whether the psychologist holds Christian views or not, is immaterial, for s/he will hold what are commonly considered Christian values: honesty, sympathy, a desire to help and promote the good of the other person. Otherwise, why become a psychologist?

There are psychologists who have little contact with the public because they are laboratory based and may not be dealing with people, but with ideas, tests, theories. A Christian, or other individual, would not be seeking help from such a psychologist but from one specially trained in psychological treatments including cognitive behaviour therapy and other talking therapies.

There is nothing wrong if a Christian decides to see a psychologist or a psychiatrist. This is because the Bible does not specifically state that seeing such person is a sin or a wrongful act to do. However, it should be noted that psychologists or psychiatrists can come from different backgrounds and beliefs, and some may be Christians, while some may be unbelievers.

If a Christian person wishes to see a psychologist or a psychiatrist, it is recommended that they seek someone who is a believer because he or she can fully express the knowledge of the Bible and do so in a godly manner. If a Christian decides to see a psychologist who practice secular psychology, then he or she should not expect that the person will use a Biblical approach because secular psychology rejects faith.
