Poison ivy is the simpler name for Toxicodendron radicans. This plant most likely would not cause great danger to someone if they became exposed to it. Instead, it would be rather irritating with a red rash. The rash can hurt too. It is expected for the rash not to be touched. Poison ivy is quite easy to be affected by it. The leaves of poison ivy have a liquid on them. This liquid is known as urushiol.

Simply having your skin come in contact with the liquid will poison your skin with a rash. So, the three leaflets are shaped like an almond and have a shiny look to them because of the liquid on them. It is best to look for these shiny leaves if you are walking among plants.
