This book - “The Agony and the Ecstasy” - was written by Irving Stone. It’s a biographical novel about Michelangelo Buonarroti. For those who are unfamiliar with the name, Michelangelo is the famous Italian sculptor and painter. He’s best known for his sculpture of David, from the biblical story about David and Goliath. The book focuses on a few of Michelangelo’s works, and most of the information for this novel came from personal letters that Stone found from Michelangelo. A couple of the works discussed in the book are the wooden crucifix and the process that went into that.

The book has its fair share of references to it in pop culture. The book is referenced in “Mad Men” - the television show - as well as the book “Six Degrees of Separation”.
