Joseph Conrad wrote this book, but it was originally published in 1899. Like many novels of the time that have separate “books” in the novel, it was originally published as a newspaper serial. The serial had three parts. The book, however, follows the story of adventurers going up the Congo river, and tries to make a parallel between Africa and London as two places of darkness in the world. This brings up questions of the imperialism and the racism that was incredibly prevalent during the time.

Interestingly enough, the book didn’t enjoy a lot of success while Conrad was alive. It has been analyzed a lot over the years, particularly because Conrad uses vague language and leaves a lot to the imagination of the readers.
