E.M. Forester wrote the book “Howards End”. This book confronts a lot of the social norms of the time it was written. It takes apart typical social conduct, codes of conduct of the time, and even personal relationships from that era of history.

The book focuses on three different families: one wealthy, upper-class family; one well-off, middle-class family; and one impoverished, lower-class family. The families lives are intertwined from the moment the upper and middle class families meet. The lower-class family comes into play when one of the wealthy sons reveals that he had an affair with the young mother of the lower-class family and left her as soon as he could, and as soon as it suited him to do so without much regret on his part.
