Dionysus is technically a demigod, or a half-god. His mother was a mortal woman, the daughter of the king of Thebes. (Thebes, for those who don’t know, is a city in Ancient Greece that was known for its troubled existence. Its legend lives on today, as Disney made a reference to this in their movie “Hercules”). Like most demigods in Ancient Greek mythology, Zeus was his father.

In fact, Hera - Zeus’ wife - found out about the affair while Dionysus’ mother was pregnant with him. Dionysus was one of the most-widely worshipped gods in Ancient Greece, with his followers making loud ruckus while they celebrated. Dionysus is the god of wine, fertility, madness/lunacy, and of winemaking. His name is referenced in the CBS series “Bull” by Michael Weatherly’s character.
