“Fantasy Variations on A Theme by Niccolo Paganini” was written by James Barnes, an American composer. No one is quite sure when this piece was originally written. That said, it is inspired by the pieces of Niccolo Paganini. Paganini was an Italian composer who lived between 1782 and 1840. He played the violin, the viola, and the guitar. He was also a prolific composer. His 24 caprices are among the most influential violin music compositions.

These pieces drastically changed how the violin could be played, since at that time, it was considered to be a rather monotonous instrument. He played with the timbre of the instruments, and often managed to make his music sound like other kinds of instruments, even though it was all on the violin.
