In the most technical sense of the word, fruit snacks are indeed a candy. This is because of a couple of things. The first thing is that they are filled with a crap-ton of sugar, just like any other candy you’ll find on the market. While most brands do try to keep the sugar from overwhelming whatever fruit items are in there (usually juices, but some brands do use fruit puree or something like that), it doesn’t always happen.
Since fruit snacks are gummy and chewy like gummy worms or gummy rings, it makes sense to group them in the gummy candy group. So, all said and done, keep the fruit snacks to a minimum as you do other candy.
Fruit snacks are basically a gummi candy just the same as gummi worms or gummi bears. They have much the same kinds of ingredients in them as gummi candies which basically means a lot of sugar mainly. Some fruit snacks such as Welch’s fruit snacks do have some fruit puree in them but it is very little compared to all the sugar that is mainly derived from concentrated white grape juice and apple juice.
Because they really have no nutritional value as one might originally think fruit snacks are considered a candy just like any other gummi. They should be approached with the same amount of moderation as all the other gummi candies.
