The first stage of mitosis, according to the stages presented in this list, is interphase. This is the stage where the cell is kind of psyching itself up for the task. Cell division is a difficult kind of process, and if it doesn’t go right, it can lead to cancerous cells or other defects. The other stages of mitosis are prophase, metaphase, anaphase, and telophase - often called PMAT in schools in America to help students remember the order.

Each stage has a specific function in getting the cell ready to divide, with telophase being the last thing to happen before the cell actually splits - a process called cytokinesis. This is when the cytoplasm is split between the two cells before the cell membrane splits the cells.
