Ethanol (ethyl alcohol) and isopropanol (isopropyl alcohol) are types of alcohols that will kill bacteria. The alcohol is able to kill bacteria by first making the fats that are found in the bacteria more soluble in water so the cell membrane loses its structural integrity and begins to break down and fall apart.
Once the cell membrane is broken down, the alcohol is able to then enter the cell and kill the proteins in the bacteria. Alcohol is found in many cleaners and even in mouth washes. Alcohol moth washes are proven to kill more bacteria and create better oral health.
