The purpose of a food bank is to provide food to those that otherwise can’t afford to buy groceries. The price of groceries has increased 5 percent within the past year, while staple items such as milk and bread have increased by more than 30 percent forcing many people to apply for food stamps just so they can eat.
Food banks come by their food sources largely through donations from local food suppliers and generous civilians. It’s estimated that food banks around the nation provide more than 1.9 billion pounds of food per year to those that cannot afford to buy all of their food from their paycheck.
