This is called the Spine. It is the back part of a book's cover which is obvious when a book is shelved in a bookcase; the segment which is connected to the front and back covers.The most vital capacity of the spine is to give a place to tie the pages together.

No spine and a ""book"" is essentially a square of paper. Its auxiliary capacity is to give a place to the title and writer to be shown, so the book can be effectively recognized.
