The king of Piedmont Sardinia is Victor Emmanuel II. He reigned from 1849 to March of 1861. At that time, he became the king of Italy. His father abdicated the throne, which allowed him to take it, after a defeat at the hands of the Austrians. The defeat was considered humiliating, hence why his father decided to abdicate the throne. Peace came only after King Victor Emmanuel II fired his prime minister and got the rest of the lower parliament on board.

As Italy fought for unification, Victor Emmanuel II fought to keep Nice and Savoy, instead of giving them up to France. He ended up giving them to France anyway, despite his best efforts on the issue. It was because of him that they were able to take the Papal States from France.
