The last queen of Hawaii was Queen Liliuokalani. The story of why she is the last queen of Hawaii is a sad one indeed. Hawaii, at one point, was a sovereign nation. They even had embassies and ambassadors in other countries. However, the United States of America had to protect its business interests, and made it harder for the monarchy to protect itself. Originally, this is all that happened for a long time. THey didn’t touch the monarchy as a ruling body; they simply made it harder for that ruling body to get rid of American business.
However, when Liliuokalani tried to restore monarchy as it had been and give voting back to people that had been disenfranchised, the United States citizens in the country rose up and took over. It was a slow takeover, and didn’t officially become final until Liliuokalani abdicated her throne in 1895.
