The party wanted to take word away from the language in order to stop thought crime, and so that only one word can be used instead of having many synonyms for the same thing. Also, it wanted to narrow the range of thought. This scene occurs in the famous dystopian novel 1984 that is written by the English author George Orwell.

This novel was published in the year 1949 and is set in an Oceania. Oceania is a region which is at war, and witness constant surveillance by government along with public manipulation. In this novel, the residents have to follow a language that is invented by the government, under a dictatorship-like rule.
