Checksum is the name of an error checking procedure that uses a formula to calculate a numeric value. Checksum uses a small sized datum derived from a block of digital data for the purpose of detecting errors that might have been introduced during transmission or storage.

Checksum is most often applied to an installation file after it is received from the download server. Quite often checksums are used to verify data integrity but cannot be relied upon by themselves to verify data authenticity.
