Phlebotomy means to make an incision, in a vein with a needle. Performing the skin/vein puncture phlebotomists collect blood primarily by performing venipunctures. Phlebotomy was once used widely to treat many types of disease and infection but is now restricted to the treatment of only a few conditions.

The drawing of the blood for transfusion, apheresis, diagnostic testing, experimental procedure. It is the practice of collecting samples, and bloodletting, which is an ancient medical practice.
