If we are going to answer the question under “First-semester literature final”, we will be forced to answer letter 14 as the correct answer. However, this answer is INCORRECT. Beowulf did not pick 14 men to come with him to fight Grendel. That being said, the CORRECT ANSWER should be letter 15. To support this answer, it was mentioned in the Old Epic poem that Beowulf chose FIFTEEN warriors to accompany him in the ship he prepared for his journey to meet Hrothgar. They then watched the great hall and waited for Grendel to attack, with Grendel managing to kill one of Beowulf’s warriors by tearing him to pieces, drinking his blood and devouring his corpse before attacking Beowulf himself.
