The Sistine Chapel is the official residence of the Pope in the Vatican. The Sistine Chapel gained its popularity because of its beautiful and elaborate paintings on the walls and ceilings done by Michelangelo between the years of 1508 and 1512. The paintings done by Michelangelo on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel is considered to be one of the largest artistic accomplishments known to human civilization, with the chapel measuring 134 feet long by 44 feet wide! When Michelangelo was offered the job to paint the Sistine Chapel ceiling, he initially declined due to feeling he was more of a sculptor than a painter and feared that it was an offer set up by enemies hoping for inevitable failure.

Luckily for mankind, Michelangelo eventually accepted and gave us one of the most popular pieces of art in history.
