Joseph Cornell was an American artist and film maker. Cornell is considered to be one of the pioneers and most well-known artists when it comes to assemblage. Assemblage is a form of art similar to that of a collage on a two dimensional surface. Cornell was largely self-taught in the field of art and lived mostly on his own, working on his art while caring for his parents and disabled brother.
Cornell struggled to make ends meet during his life (1903-1972), while having to work as a fabric salesman during the great depression. Joseph Cornell’s artistry took off in the 1930s allowing him to live a more comfortable life and making it easier to support his family.
