The Triceratops was a massive dinosaur with three large horns that lived 66 million years ago. Despite its size and appearance, the Triceratops was an herbivore meaning that it only ate plant material. Its mouth was shaped like a beak and was built for grinding up plant matter instead of the sharp powerful teeth and jaws, meant for ripping flesh apart that belonged to the carnivorous dinosaurs.

The Triceratops could have up to 800 teeth in its mouth that were stacked in columns. Any given Triceratops might have 36 to 40 of these columns of teeth. The number and placement of teeth suggest that this dinosaur ate large volumes of fibrous plants like ferns and palms. These types of plants grew in Prairies at the time.
