There are no known species of vultures currently living in Great Britain. During Victorian times, the Christian church made a public statement denouncing the vulture and declaring it to be unclean and unholy. Over the next 20 years, they were hunted and almost brought to extinction in the area. A few species were able to flee to other parts of Europe and somehow survived in the mountains of Spain and in the Balkans.
In recent years, scientists have recognized the benefits that vultures play on the ecosystem and are doing their best to bring them back from the brink of extinction. They are now successfully breeding them in the wild and have brought them back into several European countries, such as Berlin, Germany and Holland. Scientists believe that in the next few years, they will have them introduced into Britain once again.
