The capital of Gambia is Banjul. The Gambia or the Republic of The Gambia is located in West Africa and is surrounded by Senegal. It has an area of 10,689 square kilometers and a population of more than 1 million people which makes the Gambia the smallest country in mainland Africa. Banjul, on the other hand, has a total area of 12 square kilometers and a population of more than 34 thousand people.
Its name is derived from the Mande people who are known for gathering specific fibers on the island which were used to manufacture and produce ropes. Banjul is famously known as the place where the bloodless coup d’etat happened on July 22, 1994, which had overthrown Dawda Jawara as their president.
