Verbal method is concerned with clearly writing out the given scale on a map. Aside from verbal method, there are two other types such as graphic or bar method and representative fraction or ratio method. Although these two have their own advantages such as having an enlarged map with an enlarge scale or using ratios when the fraction is already large for a map, verbal method is the easiest scale to understand because the units it uses are familiar to everyone (example: inches and miles).

To easily explain verbal scale, just think of it this way: The verbal scale uses words to describe the ratio between the real world and the map’s scale. So, whenever you read a map and you see words like this: 3 inches = 10 miles, then that means that you are reading a verbal method.
