The highest possible value for the GDI is 1 or 1.0. GDI stands for Gender Development Index and it measures the gender gaps in terms of human development achievements through three dimensions – knowledge or expected years of schooling, health or life expectancy and living standards or gross national income (GNI).

Different countries have different gender development index. When it comes to knowledge or expected years of schooling and health or life expectancy at birth, it is believed that women have a higher index than men. However, men have a higher index when it comes to living standards or gross national income. An example of this is the United States of America where people have a GDI of 0.993 when all of the dimension are combined.
