The Equinox is when the middle of the Earth passes by the middle of the sun. When this takes place, the amount of time during the day equates to the amount of time during the night. This happens everywhere on Earth. However, in the terms of the amount of time, it is actually meaning the amount of light and darkness. It does not necessarily mean the amount of minutes. Now, a new term called equilux is used to describe this occurrence.

In the case of the equinox that occurs on September 22nd or 23rd, this equinox is called the autumnal equinox since it occurs in autumn. The other equinox which occurs in March is called the vernal equinox. Typically, an equinox occurs when the Sun is up directly over the head.
