It may seem that Christopher Columbus was the first explorer in North America, but the Vikings actually explored North America long before Columbus. The Vikings were from the Scandinavian area of Europe. The leader of the Vikings was Leif Eriksson who became an explorer by following in his father’s footsteps. Erik the Red claimed Greenland which is where Leif Eriksson was born and raised.

Led by Eriksson, the Vikings explored Newfoundland which they realized was quite different from the colder temperatures in Europe. In more recent years, archaeologists discovered evidence of Eriksson’s settlement and exploration in North America. Even though Columbus explore North America in 1492, Eriksson and the Vikings explored there around 1000 A.D. in which they learned and grew grapes for wine.
