There are eight states and territories in Australia. When it comes to states, Australia only has six states such as Western Australia which is the largest state in the country in terms of land size, Queensland which is the second largest state in terms of land size with an area of 1,730,648 square kilometers, South Australia which is the third largest state with an area of 983,482 square kilometers, New South Wales with an area of 800,642 square kilometers and has a population of more than 7 million people, Victoria which has an area of 227,416 square kilometer, and Tasmania which is the smallest state with an area of 68,401 square kilometers.
The other two – the Australian Capital Territory and the Northern Territory are considered as territories and not states. These territories include the following places: Norfolk Island, Christmas Island, Keeling Islands, Coral Sea Islands, Heard Island and McDonald Islands, Jervis Bay Territory, Ashmore and Cartier Islands and the Australian Antarctic Territory.
