Which of the following is the best example of generativity?
A. Seeing how other people live to help define your sense of purpose B. Contibuting spare time to chaprone your children s school trip C. Making positive life changes to minimize health risks D. Regaining lost functions through a fitness program
Contibuting spare time to chaperone your children's school trip. The idea of ‘generativity’ was developed by Erik Erikson and refers to a desire to help the next generation of your community beyond your own family. This is a good example because it’s not just your children that benefit, but all the other kids on the trip as well. Other examples of generativity might include mentoring children through a big brothers/big sisters program, or volunteering to speak to young people about your field of expertise.
You can remember the concept of ‘generativity’ by remembering that it comes from the same root as ‘generation’ and ‘generous.’ A generative person is one who is generous with the next generation. None of the other options really describe that kind of behavior.
