SPD is an abbreviation, and it stands for the Sterile Processing Department. It is also referred to as the CSSD, which stands for Central Sterile Services Department. These are areas in the hospital where items are sterilized and disinfected,

First, the items that need to be cleaned need to be transported to the area of the hospital. The items then need to be sorted through, and any waste needs to be disposed of.

Next, the items need to be cleaned in a cleaner, preferably an ultrasonic one. From there, they should be rinsed and dried, packed, and sterilized through a sterilization machine.

During the reprocessing, and decontamination sequence, reusable medical devices are cleaned by eradicating visual soil from an instrument before further processing. Medical devices are sorted, stripped, and pro treated with chemistries to the point of usability, which keeps instruments moist while in transport to the SPD in a leak-proof puncture-resistant container characterized as being biohazardous.

Instruments that are not cleaned immediately should be treated with an instrument cleaner corresponding to the manufacturer’s written instructions for use. Manual cleaning of recyclable medical devices involves a three -sink process with cleaning chemistries including enzymatic, colorless, and alkaline detergent followed by a treated water rinse.

Automated cleaning is the next stage for most surgical instrumentation and may be performed in an ultrasonic cleaner or washer-disinfector, depending on the device and hospital policies and procedures.
