All of the above-all of these: chemical fertilizer use runs off into waterways because roughly half of all fertilizer applied does not even reach the plant, running into the waterways and creating toxic algal blooms and dead-zones (aquatic areas stripped of nutrients). phosphorous and nitrogen are key components of chemical fertilizer and have to be mined, which requires large amounts of non-renewable fossil fuels and emits them into the air. fertilizers also deplete the soil of its nutrients and create a dependence on continual fertilizer use.
