2nd sunday in may-2nd sunday in may. the mothers day in germany, which in german is called muttertag. muttertag occurs on the same day as mothers day in the u.s. (the 2nd sunday in may). along with germany, muttertag is observed in austria and switzerland too. muttertag was first observed in germany on 1922 but it didnt become an official holiday until 1933. there was a special significance during the hitler regime. there was even a medal given to the mothers who birthed children for the vaterland (native country). the medal was nicknamed karnickelorden, the order of the rabbit. after the war, the holiday became more like the holiday we know these days, were we give cards and flowers. if the holiday falls on pfingstsonntag it is moved to the first sunday in may. pfingstsonntag is a feast that occurs on the 50th day after easter, seven weeks. it commemorates the decent of the holy spirit on the disciples of christ.
