Using american style, the knife is held in the right hand only when cutting, and is placed back onto the plate before putting the food into the mouth.-traditionally, using american style, the knife is held in the right hand and is then placed back onto the plate before the fork is moved to the dominant hand (left or right). the food is then placed into the mouth with the tines pointing upward.there are minute differences between american style and continental style. the most significant being that the knife and fork remain in the right and left hand, respectively, throughout the eating process.the another small difference is that the fork is held with the tines facing down while cutting. the knife is also used to push food onto the fork.
