Alarm: Essentially a fight-or-flight response; highly physiological.

Resistance: Physiological changes stabilize as coping sets in and performance, or dealing with the stressor, may appear to be completely under control.

Exhaustion: The body's resources are depleted and the individual cannot function properly or fight off illness.

Constructive coping methods include: Being action-oriented or confronting problems directly being relatively realistic about ones stress and ones options and resources, rather than being unrealistically positive or negative learning to recognize and sometimes inhibit disruptive emotional responses to stress making efforts to ensure that ones body is not vulnerable to the damaging effects of stress (e.g., adequate sleep, proper diet).
