Hattie wyatt caraway.-hattie wyatt caraway, a democrat from arkansas, was the first woman to be elected to the u.s. senate. susan b. anthony was a womens suffragette who, in 1869, along with elizabeth cady stanton, founded the national woman suffrage association, with the goal of obtaining the vote for women. francis person became secretary of labor in 1933, making her the first woman appointed to a presidential cabinet position. in 1940, margaret chase smith was elected to serve out her husbands term as congressman from main. in 1948, she was elected to the senate, making her the first woman to serve in both chambers of congress.
