300 mg-the american heart association recommends that people eat no more than 300 milligrams of cholesterol. if youre trying to lower your ldl cholesterol level, then you might be told by your doctor to eat no more than 200 milligrams per day. the national cholesterol education program recommends that people first work to eat a maximum of 300 milligrams of cholesterol per day (as part of the step i diet), and then gradually work toward eating a maximum of 200 milligrams of cholesterol per day (as part of the step ii diet).
