This is a telling short story that is meant to touch the burgeoning guilt in those kids who have done wrong, or burgeoning potential in kids who might. This woman is poor, as is shown by the struggle up to her room, the very few bits in her home and the noise of other tenants.
She has a job with unsociable hours now, but if life had been easier she would have a proper home by now. there will have been many times when she has wanted more, let alone fancy shoes. She understands the want in the boy but wants to teach him a lesson in honesty and she does this through rough kindness, and getting him to listen rather than forcing him to answer questions.
He must learn to attend to his appearance, to avoid hurting others or get advantage through wronging others. The story shows his beginning of wishing to be trusted. The options give only one possible answer, B. She has been where Roger is...and put it behind her.
