5 l/min-simple face masks - for increased flow rates. provide 40 to 60% fio2 at a flow rate of 5 to 8 l/min. minimum flow rate is 5l/min to ensure flushing of co2 from the mask -advantages: more comfortable than nasal cannulas for administration of higher amounts of oxygen. -disadvantages: can be uncomfortable for clients because they must fit snuggly against the face. eating, drinking, and talking are impaired. can be frightening, especially for the client with a history of claustrophobia. if flow rates are not adequate, rebreathing of carbon dioxide can become an issue. p. 31
