The force that acts between the protons and neutrons of an atom is called the nuclear force. Basically, the nuclear force holds protons and neutrons very tightly, and hence, it's very hard to break that bond.

Some of the facts about nuclear force are:

  • This force is attractive in nature.
  • It acts on both protons and neutrons.
  • It is ten million times stronger than the chemical binding forces.
  • Its range is very small.
  • The nuclear force is identical for all nucleons.
