The proverb in question implies that similar people work together or people of the same character attract each other. The proverb that is similar to birds of the same feather flock together is “the man known by the company he keeps.”

This proverb implies different meanings like the person's behavior or character. This proverb also provides evidence of the kind of a person an individual is.

This means that from the character and behavior of your friends, you can be judged and also evaluated. Another evidence is that a person attracts his company from his behavior and character, meaning that you attract your company, which can be people of positive impact or people of negative impact. Lastly, be aware of the kinds of company you keep because you can be judged by their character.

The man is known by the company he keeps.

The quote in the question indirectly implies that similar people stay together. A man can be judged by the company he keeps and a man attracts a company that is similar to him.

The man is known for the company that he keeps. It is evident that you will not be friends with people if you do not have a thing in common. There are obvious differences but there is something about that person that you connect with on a different level.

Of course, there are some friends that are just there for a short period of time but there are also some that will be there for a lifetime. Friendships are also supposed to be work on as it is a relationship. Both people have to try in order to keep the friendship going. When one stops, then that is it. The friendship is also over.
