What is your flow rate in the following scenario?
You have a patient that weighs 150 pounds. He has been resuscitated and now has a BP of 60/40. You are going to establish a dopamine drip IV piggyback. You are using a 60gtt set and wish to deliver 5 mcg/kg/min. You mix 200 mg of dopamine into 250 ml of normal saline. ?

A) 26 gtts/min.

Desired Dose:
150 lbs = 68 kg. At 5mcg/kg/min = 340 mcg/min.

Dose On Hand:
200mg/250ml =
Convert mg to mcg
(200mg x 1000 mcg/mg)/250ml =
200 x (1000/250) mcg/ml =
(200 x 4)mcg/ml =
800 mcg/ml.

Finaly we have:
(Desired Dose / Dose On Hand) x Drip Set =
(340mcg/min / 800mcg/ml) x 60 gtts/ml =
Cancel out the zeros
(34/8)x 6 gtts/min = 34 x (6/8) = 34 x (3/4) = 104 / 4 = 26
