If you are having trouble swallowing or if you are having pain when swallowing, your doctor might order an esophageal manometry. Esophageal manometry is a medical procedure used by doctors to determine how well your esophagus is working to move food through your esophagus and into your stomach.

When food moves through your esophagus, muscle bands at the top and bottom of your esophagus open and close. The esophageal manomety test will give your doctor information about the pressure, strength and wave pattern of the muscles and will help your doctor to determine whether your esophagus is working properly.
