During contraction, the muscle origin moves toward the insertion. In reality, the orgin doesn't move. The origin of a muscle is the attachment site. While it doesn't move, the rest of the muscle will. The part of the muscle that does move during contraction is the insertion.

The origin is closer to the body, while the insertion is further away. An example is between the wrist and the elbow. The wrist is further away from the elbow. The elbow is closer than the wrist. The purpose of a muscle contracting is to produce an action.

  • Muscles can only pull, they never push.
  • All muscles have at least two attachments: the origin and insertion.
  • All muscles cross at least one joint.
