What should the third baseman do? It's the top of the first inning with the score 0 to 0. There is a runner on second base with no outs. The batter hits a ground ball to the third baseman. The runner on second takes two steps toward third base, stops, and claps his hands. 





A. He should throw to first to get the batter-runner out. The runner on second is not forced and can go back to second.
B. He should hold the ball and run towards the runner at second base.
C. He should tag out the third base coach.
D. He should step on third base to get the force out.

He should throw to first to get the batter-runner out. The runner on second is not forced and can go back to second.

Remember that two runners cannot safely occupy the same base. The batter cannot go back to home, so he is forced to go to first. The runner on second can stay there. He is not forced. There is no runner on first who must advance to second.
