What action should the referee take? In a setting that is not an obvious goal-scoring opportunity, defender B2 starts holding attacker A8s jersey just outside the penalty area. The referee applies advantage but the holding continues into the penalty area where A8 is finally pulled away from the ball.

A. The referee can take no action after invoking the advantage clause.
B. Award a penalty kick.
C. The referee has discretionary power to yellow card B2.
D. Since the advantage did not materialize, go back and punish the “first” foul with a direct free kick for team Awhere B2 first held the jersey.
