Ambulation is the time when a patient initially gets up from the bed for the first time after an operation and does some light activity or takes a few steps. It is of critical importance. Normally, patient care serves to provide patients with aids if there is any need. This can include transfer belts is the patient is unsteady or weak.

He may even need walking aids, crutches, a cane, walkers or braces. The main aim is to get the patient up and walking to assess his condition. However, the patient cannot shuffle or slide when he is walking as this puts him at risk for a fall.
