The genetic code is a set of rules in which information that is encoded within genetic material such as DNA or mRNA sequences is translated into proteins by living cells. The genetic code consists of 64 codons. The genetic code is actually highly similar within all organisms and can be expressed by a table containing 64 codons in every organism.
The genetic code determines a protein’s amino acid sequence but other genomic regions determine when and where these proteins are produced. Most of the time genes are encoded with a single and simple scheme. Each codon will usually consist of three nucleotides.
