A karyotype is the number as well as the appearance of the chromosomes in the cell nuclei of an organism or species. A few true things about karyotypes are that homologous chromosomes are paired, sex chromosomes are identified separately from autosomes, chromosome pairs are assorted by both size and shape, and banding pairs are used in pairing chromosomes.

However, it is not true that chromosome pairs are numbered from smallest to largest, instead they are numbered largest to smallest. Two of the chromosomes specify sex, male or female. The other pairs are numbered 1 to 22.
