This is a tricky question, but the answer is C. Although you may suspect that collecting enough of the sample or choosing the proper needle size is the most important, in actuality, there is a vital step that you must do first before you begin any of the following steps.

The most important step in the performance of venipuncture is identifying the patient. Even though you may feel like this is very clear and feel like you would not mistake the patient, it happens quite often. It is always best to thoroughly check the patient's identity before beginning anything else.
